High-resolution surface solar radiation dataset over China (2007-2014)

1. Introduction

The dataset contains a total of eight-year (2007-2014) data. The temporal resolution of the data is hourly, and the spatial resolution of the data is 5km. The file is named as “RAD_yyyymmddhh.dat”, where “yyyy”, “mm”, “dd”, and “hh” denote year, month, day and hour (GMT time). All data are saved as binary files without header file (4 Real Floating Point). Longitude grid (X axis): 70.025:0.05:140.025, Latitude grid (Y axis): 59.975:-0.05:14.975.

3. Data processing

By combining polar orbit satellite MODIS and Japan geostationary meteorological satellite MTSAT, the key parameter for estimating surface solar radiation - cloud information is derived firstly. Once the estimated cloud parameters and other information (such as aerosol, precipitable water, ozone) are input to an efficient parameterization model, we can derive high-resolution surface solar radiation over China.

5. Data quality

The dataset is estimated data. The root mean square error (RMSE) for instantaneous surface solar radiation is generally less than 100 W m-2, and the RMSE for daily surface solar radiation is generally less than 35 W m-2.

Although we have made tremendous efforts to maintain the network, to calibrate soil moisture sensors, and to carefully process the data, unexpected instrument behaves may occur. The data provider disclaims any kind of liability for quality, performance, and fitness for a particular purpose arising out of the use.

6. Data application

The dataset is applied to develop forcing data for land process research.

7. Disclaimer

The data can only be utilized for academic research. Use of the data for other purposes (e.g. commercial use) is prohibited. No user is allowed to transfer the data to any third party.
