This study reveals that precipitation types highly depend on surface wet-bulb temperature, relative humidity, and surface elevation. Using these relationships, a new parameterization scheme is developed to discriminate rain, sleet, and snow. Evaluations for China territory show that the new scheme outperforms 11 schemes that are used in hydrological and land surface models.[VIEW IN PUBLICATIONS PAGE][PDF FILE]
